2008 Workshops' schedule

RE-HOTEL

The Renovation of the Olympic Palace intends to create Greece’s first green hotel. In order to do so Campanas have created a low impact project which develops the concept of incorporating reclaimed materials into its design.
The main challeng
e behind this project is to incorporate the ideas of agglomeration and fragmentation and maintain it as a guiding line for this project. Each room must have this characteristic that is so peculiar to Fernando and Humberto’s work.

FIRST WORKSHOP

Date:

March (on the week of 2nd to 8th)

Objective:

Re-create the existing chairs for the restaurant (Scandinavian ones from the old restaurant):
  • part of the chairs will remain as they are (with its paint removed and possibility re-painted)
  • the other part will receive prosthesis (hybrid additions)
Tasks:
  1. Remove the old paint and varnish from its surfaces, making them smoother, and allowing it to be re-painted.
  2. Apply the new varnish to its surfaces.
  3. Each participant will restore a small number of chairs. Some will only be restored (cleaned and reupholstered) maintaining its original characteristics, only with a new layer of varnish, and the others will be transformed receiving hybrid applications.
  4. These applications can be from different parts of other objects, but they must be applied resembling a “band-aid” or a parasite, alluding to the characteristic present in Campanas’ works, such as the TransPlastic collection.
(Step one should be completed upon Campanas arrival on March 2nd. All the material needed must be at hands. F+H should only help the group develop the hybrid transformations and the creation of the parasite chairs.)

Timing:

From March to May: Complete the renovation and hybridizing of the chairs following Campanas’ instructio
ns.

SECOND WORKSHOP (need accurate measures that should be supplied by architecture team)

Date:

End of May (to be defined: either on the week
of the 18th or on the week of the 25th)

Objective:

Create mirror or leather
mosaic for room. Wardrobe and one key wall from each bedroom will be a mirror or leather mosaic wall: 78 different walls and wardrobe sliding doors should be designed and constructed by the group (with the accurate measures supplied by the architecture team).

Tasks:
  1. Select and create mirror or leather pieces containing different sizes (the pieces will need to have a nice soft finish, so you will probably need professional help with this).
  2. The walls should be designed parting from big pieces in different shapes and sizes (the guests should be able to see their whole body when they are looking at the largest piece of mirror. It needs to be functional.) and then adding the smaller pieces to soften the composition.
  3. Campanas have created a panel for a discotheque in São Paulo, which is a composition of mirror pieces, inspired on their Brasília table and should be a nice example for you to follow. They have also designed a leather chair for Edra, earlier this year (Leather Works Chair). The walls must carry this chaotic and harmonic feeling present in Campanas’ works.
MIRROR:

LEATHER:

Timing:

Pre-May: Prepare t
he materials needed (mirror or leather pieces must be at hands when Fernando and Humberto arrive for the workshop)
Workshop: produce, with C
ampanas’ help, prototype walls
From May until the co
mpletion of task: produce key walls and sliding doors

THIRD WORKSHOP

Date:

July (the date is still going to be defined)

Objective:

Create hybrid furniture parting from the old hotel’s furniture.

Tasks:
  1. Select, from the old hotel’s furniture, pieces that you like and that you find interesting somehow.
  2. From the old furniture participants should create new hybrid pieces, mixing the existing chairs, tables, sofas and others. These new pieces to be created will be pre-established by our studio, according to the interior design needs.
Timing:

Pre-July: select old furniture
July – September: develop and finish piece of furniture

FORTH WORKSHOP

Date:

September (the date is still going to be defined)

Objective:

Tasks:
  1. Construction team: Separate the pieces of wood that can be reutilized
  2. Operational team will coordinate: cleaning, hygienization and fumigation.
  3. Cut the wood in pieces with different sizes (You will need professional help for this, because the wood needs to be cut and smoothly finished). Board sizes: maximum length possible x 5 cm,15 cm ,20 cm and 30 cm width.
  4. The walls will be designed, with Campanas help, based on their Favela Chair (2003).
Observation: professional carpenter help, power tools, such as: electric saw and wood stapler is required.

Timing:

September workshop: every wood board has to be ready and at hand
September to completion of task: produce all the Favela panels

Timing:

Pre-November: Collect and prepare the material
November: Workshop November until projects’ completion: Produce all pieces Observation: For this to happen all the material should be at hands, the professional help should be there to assist you and the wood should be already prepared.
